I don't know about you, but I feel like I have been melting for the past couple of weeks. Don't get me wrong...I will take summer over winter any day, but I am more of a fall girl myself. This in mind, I am sure it is easy to guess that I don't like to sweat. Does anyone really like to sweat? Other than at the gym, that is. Maybe I am in the minority, but I would rather be freezing, layering on cardigan after cardigan in the office as opposed to dripping my makeup off on the way to work. So, my summer at work style this [steamy] season is office-appropriate shorts.
Now what exactly makes shorts office appropriate?
Length is by far the most important factor here. I generally use the old high school dress code rule -- stand tall with your arms to your side & if your shorts are longer than where your fingertips touch, they pass inspection! Generally, I try not to buy shorter than a 4" inseam if I plan to wear to work. The only exception to this is if you are going to pair with tights (but I most certainly am not in the middle of summer).
Also, make sure you are dressed evenly. What I mean by this is that since you are bearing more leg than normal, you should cover up your upper body more than you usually would. I feel the easiest way to address this is to pair with a blazer (you can toss it over your shoulder on your way to the office) or a long-sleeve blouse (chiffon or something of the sort during the summer months).
My favorites are definitely from Express (1), but I have also had success at New York & Company (2). May I also suggest White House Black Market (3) & Arden B (4) -- they are on my summer clearance wish list for this month!
Troubleshooting: How to dress up shorts? If you are buying office-appropriate shorts, chances are they are sateen...which needs no dressing up! Just pretend you have your normal work slacks on and dress to the nines. I don't have a full shot of me in my work shorts, but I do have on my Express sateen shorts on in the outfit below...
See, that wasn't a difficult outfit to put together, was it?
I hope you love this style as much as I do. After all, if we have to be hot this summer we might as well be fashionable too!
What are you summer office staples? I would love to hear from you!
