Tips for Styling Your Shelving

I am a sucker for well-styled shelving. I am a sucker for shelving in general; I just love storage, I guess. But lets be honest with each other right now, we want it to be not only functional but pretty too. Who wants to stare at clutter all day long? Hoarders. So unless you are one, lets focus on the pretty right now. Here are some tips I think are important when it comes to styling your shelves...

1) Start from scratch; take everything of your shelving. Yes, I'm serious. You are never going to get the perfect configuration if you are lazy and just trying to make it happen around what you already have. Start with a clean slate!

2) Decide how you want to organize the items on the shelf. I am going to assume that you are a bibliophile like myself and we are going to talk books. You need to determine if you are going to go all visual and sort by color or height OR if you are going to functional and sort by author or title.

3) Vary your placement. I think this is definitely one of the simplest tricks with the biggest impact. Stand some up, lay some down...don't be boring, spice it up a bit!

4) Accessorize. Who said you had to only be functional? No one...that's why you are reading this. Add some extra accessories in there to pretty it up.

5) Don't overdo it. You don't have to have something taking up every single inch of the shelving unit. Some emptiness will not only be less overpowering, but it will come in handy later as your collection grows.

I would love to see photos of your already or newly styled shelving! Send them too lifeissodelish@gmail.com & maybe you will be featured in a post!
