Making the Most of Your Dorm Space

It is almost time to start heading back to school and we all know how difficult it can be do function in cramped dorm space. There are some simple things that can take this space to the next level and make your academic year significantly easier to handle.

1. Rearrange It

The standard positioning of your dorm room furniture may seem like it makes the most sense because that is they way they are all arranged, but it may not be the case. Move things around until you find the layout that works best for you.

2. Move It On Up

Maximize your space by lofting your bed. Most dorms have the extra posts to make this possible. If you have zero interest in literally climbing into bed each night, I understand completely (I only made it one semester). Raise your bed to the highest level and invest in bed risers. The ability to hideaway all of your stuff under your bed will not only create much-needed extra space, but will also cut down on clutter.

3. Warm It Up

At the risk of sounding old...when I was in college, all of our flooring was tile. I know that is not the case everywhere these days, however. If you are one of the unfortunate souls like myself stuck with freezing cold tile in the morning, pick up some throw rugs to warm up the space. Also keep in mind that most dorms are centrally controlled in terms of temperatures so you may want to pick up some extra blankets. My dorm was always hot, spring or fall, so I should have bought stock in fans.

4. Dress It Up

It is no secret that dorm room walls are bland and boring. No one wants to stare at white walls all day (or blue, in my case...I don't know if it was better or worse). You also do not want to be fined at the end of the year for wall damage from hanging your posters and whatever else. So, I highly suggest picking up some cute wall decals. They peel off without any damage and spruce up your space in the meantime. Also, the dry erase and chalkboard varieties are perfect for your door!

5. All In the Props

The rest is in the details. Pick up some cute foot stools that also serve as extra seating when you have friends over. As for your desk, the items your buy need to work not only for your organizational style, but for your roommates as well. Hiding away as much as you can is usually best. Clutter can drive anyone crazy in a space that small. Add character in the little things like desk lamps, throw pillows and photo frames.

I hope this helps get you dorm-ready. Just remember, have fun with it!
