Wellness Wednesday: Cheating Yourself

Today I want to get real about where I am at in my weightloss journey. I have spent the past several weeks stuck and frustrated. I had a week off, spent most of it on the road and eating like crap. As a result, I gained. I spent the following couple of weeks trying to get back on track, but still really struggling. I wanted to snack because I was used to consuming more (bc crappy food isn't as filling), but I didn't want to count calories. I wanted to exercise more, but I was hungry, burnt out and just didn't feel like it. Who's been there?

Well I have news for you. You have to count those calories & don't cheat on your steps (shaking your arm so your fitbit thinks your walking when you're sitting at your desk doesn't actually count as exercise...just saying). If you don't, you are only cheating yourself. Sure, your daily calorie count LOOKS like it is on track because you didn't log that bag of Doritos and your step goal is on point because you put your pedometer on your dog for the day, but you will not see the results of this because IT DIDN'T ACTUALLY HAPPEN.

I quite literally kicked myself in the ass last week. I challenged myself to get more than my usual step goal for four out of five work days AND get my happy ass to the gym, on top of logging every single thing I consumed (regardless of what it did to my calorie goal). You know what happened? Just yesterday I finally dropped below 150, after being stuck there (& even a little above there after vacation) for more than three weeks.

There is one thing about weight loss that has and will always remain true: you get out of it what you put into it. Cheat days are fine (and let's face it, we all need them sometimes), but it is unlikely you will see the scale drop as a result. The fast food, the booze, choosing the TV over exercise for a week straight...it will catch up with you. I am not saying you cannot indulge in these things; you just have to track them so you have realistic expectations. Leaving things out of myfitnesspal isn't winning at it's game; it's cheating...YOURSELF. You are the only one with something to lose in this, not whatever app or gadget you think you are cheating.

Think about it. Bottom line: just be accountable.
